I forgot the Boston Marathon was yesterday. You didn’t. That difference changed everything.

Portrait of Dear Resilience

Dear Resilience, Yesterday, tens of thousands of people ran the Boston Marathon. They trained, ran and now have a life long memory. I forgot it was Marathon Monday. Twelve years ago, I stood near the finish line after the Boston Marathon bombing and photographed people whose lives changed in an instant. You, resilience, let me stand close to something I did not have to carry. I helped people write messages on their bodies. I took their photos. Some of those photographs became symbols of the city. “Boston Strong” was a message people wrote. That phrase mattered. It gave people something to say when there were no words. It helped a city move forward. For a long time, I called many of the people I became friends with during this shoot. I checked in. I marked the date. And then this year, I didn’t. That is the difference between me and you, resilience. You do not forget. Because inside of each person, when something bad happens, you show up and you stay. You come in the days that follow, and stay well past the news cameras and tributes. You, resilience, can’t be described in a single phrase. You belong to the people who are still living with what happened, giving them what they need, day by day. Boston Strong, day by day.
