This photo was taken during a challenging time in my career. The Executive Director of the organization I worked for (I was the Associate Executive Director) wasn't the best leader and morale was low. She didn't appear confident in herself and that manifested in ways that were designed to make others feel 'less than', myself included. During one such incident I remember her voicing concern that my credentials would be included in my signature (she didn't have an MBA, wasn't a CAE or CMP, all of which I have/am) and she thought it might make her look bad. I recall offering to leave my credentials off my signature if it would make her feel better. As soon as I said it, I remember feeling angry at myself for trying to make myself smaller so she could feel bigger. That was a definite turning point for me. It wasn't long after that I made a change in my employment. I'll never forget that and will never let someone else make me feel small again. I know my value.
