On June 9, 2025, my dad and I drove my mom to rehab. It was a day I had hoped would come for years, yet when it finally arrived, it became one of the hardest days of my life. Addiction had been a battle she fought for so long, and she had finally reached the point where she was ready to seek help. As painful as it was to watch, I knew this step could be the beginning of something better. The timing made everything feel even heavier. My mom and I were supposed to teach Vacation Bible School together the following week. We had planned for it, looked forward to it, and imagined serving side by side. Instead, I found myself standing there alone, feeling like a piece of me was missing. That week was filled with worry, sadness, and uncertainty. But every day, my son would climb into the car and ask to listen to the Vacation Bible School songs on repeat. One afternoon, I turned on my Spotify playlist, and that’s when I heard “Lemonade” by Forrest Frank for the first time. It quickly became our anthem. “Can you play the lemonade song, Mommy?” The song talks about how God takes the sour things in our lives and turns them into something sweet — how He washes our worries away and stays with us through every struggle. As I listened to those lyrics over and over, I found myself reflecting on the difficult seasons I had already survived. I thought about losing my little brother to suicide when he was only nineteen, and learning how to navigate life without him. I remembered the pain and stress of a custody battle with my ex. I thought about my mom’s addiction and the heartbreak that came with it. I remembered the uncertainty of IVF and wondering what the future held for my husband and me. But alongside those memories, I began to see something else. I saw God’s faithfulness. I saw the blessings that remained through every storm. I thought about my amazing husband, my precious son, and the family who had stood by me. Despite everything, there was still so much good in my life. And how incredible that my little boy was so excited to sing about Jesus. In the middle of one of the hardest weeks I had faced in a long time, God used the sweet, innocent voice of my son — and a simple song about lemonade — to remind me that He was still there. Now, whenever I hear that song, it takes me back to that season. It reminds me of the fear, the uncertainty, and the heartache. But even more than that, it reminds me of hope. It reminds me that Jesus takes our burdens, our battles, and our worries and carries them for us. He takes the lemons life hands us and somehow turns them into lemonade. And when we trust Him, He brings sweetness even from the hardest seasons.
